Propulsion Engineered to Outperform

Steerprop designs and manufactures azimuth propulsors and thrusters in several configurations: standard Z-drive and L-drive (permanent magnet motor) units, contra-rotating propeller (CRP) units, retractable azimuth thrusters for dynamic positioning, tunnel thrusters, and the purpose-built ARC line for Arctic and icebreaking applications. Units are available in open or ducted propeller configurations, with power ratings from 800 kW up to 15 MW for open-water vessels and 12 MW for ice-class applications.

Azimuth thrusters are the propulsion standard for any vessel where manoeuvrability, station-keeping, or operational versatility is a priority. They are particularly well suited to ship-assist tugs, icebreakers, offshore support and construction vessels, dynamic positioning (DP) vessels, ferries operating in confined waters, research vessels, and coast guard and naval craft.

Steerprop propulsion units come with two prime mover arrangements. The LM unit integrates a permanent magnet electric motor directly into the underwater pod, offering a compact, highly efficient electric drive solution. The Z-drive uses a horizontal motor above the waterline and transmits power via a bevel gear arrangement — a more traditional configuration well suited to mechanical and hybrid drive trains.

Steerprop's azimuth propulsion range covers input power ratings from 800 kW up to 15 MW for open-water applications and 12 MW for ice-class vessels. This breadth means Steerprop can serve compact workboats and harbour tugs at the lower end through to the world's most powerful icebreakers and large offshore vessels at the upper end. Each unit is customised and optimised to the individual application, so power rating is one of several parameters Steerprop's engineering team will work through with you during the design process.

Steerprop offers two nozzle types for ducted configurations: the standard 19A-type Kort nozzle, and Steerprop's own HJ3 high-efficiency nozzle. The HJ3 is engineered to maximize bollard pull while minimizing nozzle drag at free-running speeds — particularly beneficial for offshore vessels, tugs, and workboats where both towing performance and transit efficiency are priorities.

Yes. Steerprop's control systems are designed to interface seamlessly with any DP or autopilot system. The retractable azimuth thruster range (Steerprop R) is specifically developed to set new benchmarks in DP performance, and all Steerprop control systems include extensive redundancies to ensure safe, uninterrupted operation in demanding offshore and deepwater environments. Steerprop's engineers work with shipbuilders and DP system integrators during the design phase to ensure the propulsion and DP systems are fully optimised together, and this integration support continues through commissioning and into service.

Yes. Steerprop propulsion units are compatible with mechanical, hybrid, and fully electric drive arrangements. The Steerprop T for tugs, for instance, can be specified with mechanical, hybrid, or electric prime movers. The LM unit with integrated permanent magnet motor is an inherently electric solution. This flexibility supports shipowners pursuing fuel efficiency, emissions reduction, and compliance with evolving environmental regulations.

Yes. While Steerprop units are built on proven platform designs, each propulsor is customized and optimized for the individual vessel application. This includes propeller geometry, nozzle selection, power rating, azimuth steering mechanism, and control system configuration. Steerprop uses advanced 3D design software and hydrodynamic calculation methods, incorporating continuous feedback from shipyards, owners, and operators.
