Our approach

Sustainability engineered into the propulsion.

For Steerprop, sustainability is not a programme bolted on to the business — it is the logical outcome of doing one thing exceptionally well. For decades, we have specialized in azimuth propulsion, developing solutions that help vessels operate more efficiently. Greater efficiency at sea is one of the most effective ways to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

We also embrace circularity by designing propulsion systems for exceptionally long service lives, supporting upgrades, retrofits and maintenance programs that extend vessel lifecycles and reduce waste. With products that are up to 90% recyclable, we aim to maximize the value of materials and resources throughout the product lifecycle.

Underlying this commitment is a long-range focus on environmental, social and governance standards. We measure our progress, share it transparently, and hold ourselves accountable throughout our operations and across every vessel we help put to sea.

ESG

Efficiency & emissions

The greenest fuel is the fuel you never burn.

Across a vessel’s decades in service, propulsion efficiency dwarfs almost every other sustainability decision. Steerprop azimuth and contra-rotating units are designed to extract the most thrust from every kilowatt — and to keep doing so for the full life of the ship.

Efficiency that lowers emissions

Contra-rotating propellers recover energy that a single propeller leaves in its wake, and full 360-degree azimuth thrust removes the drag of rudders and shaft lines. The result is meaningfully less fuel consumption and, according to performance calculation estimates, lower CO₂ emissions for the same work at sea.

Hybrid and electric ready

Every platform is compatible with mechanical, hybrid and fully electric prime movers, and the LM unit integrates a permanent magnet motor. Operators can adopt batteries, shore power and future fuels without re-engineering their propulsion.

Optimised for the whole lifecycle

Steerprop Care condition monitoring keeps each unit running at its designed efficiency point, catching drift before it becomes waste. Predictable, condition-based maintenance protects performance — and avoids the emissions of unplanned interventions.

Built to last, designed to be serviced

Durable, serviceable architectures mean units stay in service for decades rather than being replaced. Long maintenance intervals and OEM-quality parts extend useful life and reduce the embodied carbon of premature renewal.

ESG framework

Three pillars, one long-range commitment.

Environmental

Cutting emissions across the operating life

Our propulsion is engineered to move more vessel with less fuel. Hydrodynamically optimised azimuth and contra-rotating units lower the energy needed per nautical mile, while hybrid- and electric-ready drivetrains help operators decarbonise on their own timeline.

  • Lower fuel burn and CO₂ per nautical mile by design
  • Drivetrains ready for hybrid, battery and shore-power integration
  • Long service life that reduces material and remanufacturing demand

Social

Safe people, strong communities

Sustainability begins with the people who build and run our propulsion. Through a strong safety culture, continuous learning and an inclusive workplace, we empower our employees to succeed while building lasting value for our customers and communities.

  • Safety-first culture and continuous skills investment
  • Equal opportunities, diversity and a workplace built on respect and inclusion
  • Long-term partnerships with customers, suppliers and local communities

Governance

Accountable, transparent, built to last

We treat governance as the foundation that makes environmental and social progress credible. Clear ethics, transparent reporting and a responsible supply chain give our customers confidence that long-range commitments are matched by everyday practice.

  • Transparent ESG reporting against long-range targets
  • Responsible sourcing and supplier conduct standards
  • Robust compliance, ethics and quality management throughout
Steerprop Career

People & operations

A responsible business, not just a responsible product.

Our sustainability ambition reaches into how we operate every day. A safety-first culture, continuous skills development and responsible sourcing are embedded in everything we do, alongside the engineering excellence that defines our propulsion..

We work transparently with shipyards, operators and the communities around us — and we report our progress openly, because credible commitments are the ones you can measure.

Our Commitment

Code of Conduct

Responsible and ethical business practices guide how we operate and collaborate across our value chain. Our Code of Conduct sets the principles expected of our personnel, while our Supplier Code of Conduct extends these expectations to suppliers and business partners. Together, they promote compliance with applicable laws, respect for human and labour rights, fair competition, responsible sourcing, environmental protection, workplace health and safety, information security and the prevention of corruption. We expect concerns and suspected violations to be reported and commit to handling all reports appropriately and confidentially
