<p class="article__paragraph">Finnish marine propulsion specialist Steerprop has secured an order to supply complete propulsion packages for four Arctic Security Cutters (ASCs) being built for the US Coast Guard by Bollinger Shipyards. Each vessel will be equipped with two Steerprop Contra-Rotating Propellers (CRP) azimuth propulsors and two tunnel thrusters.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">The vessels will be constructed to an existing Multi-Purpose Icebreaker (MPI) design. During the selection process, Steerprop demonstrated that its dual-end propeller CRP concept delivered significantly higher thrust and improved efficiency compared to conventional single-propeller solutions in an MPI reference case.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">The vessels will feature Steerprop SP 120 CRP ARC LM main azimuth propulsion units and SP 25 TT ARC tunnel thrusters.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Steerprop&rsquo;s experience in Arctic operations was a key factor in the award. The company has supplied propulsion systems for one-third of the world&rsquo;s icebreakers with azimuth propulsion in operation, and offers several proprietary ice-operating design features, including tunnel thrusters that do not require protective ice grids.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Steerprop&rsquo;s CRP azimuth propulsion technology combines high thrust, excellent maneuverability and strong ice management performance with reduced fuel consumption. In model testing conducted in 2024, the CRP system achieved approximately 10% higher thrust using the same power, or the same thrust with 13.9% lower power, compared with a single-propeller system of the same power. Net thrust performance was measured at 10&ndash;17% higher than comparable single-pull propeller solutions.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">The vessels will operate across all US coastlines, with a particular focus on Arctic missions. Steerprop is scheduled to deliver the propulsion packages between 2027 and 2029.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">When <strong>Topi Kangas</strong> decided to swap high-volume metal manufacturing for specialised, project-based marine engineering, he was looking to broaden his horizons. &quot;I&rsquo;ve always been interested in sustainability and sustainable business, quality and improving processes so applying to the QHSE trainee position at Steerprop was a no-brainer,&quot; Topi shares.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">Topi is 26, originally from Ulvila near Pori and in the first year of his Master&rsquo;s studies in Industrial Engineering and Management at the University of Turku (UTU), having previously completed his Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in mechanical engineering. After first encountering Steerprop at the &quot;UTUtech job day&quot; fair, he jumped at the chance to merge his technical engineering background with high-impact Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment (QHSE) responsibilities.</p>

<h2 class="article__heading--h2">Scope of Impact &amp; Diverse Operations</h2>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">Coming from a traditional manufacturing background, Topi knew that project-based propulsion design would involve complex workflows, but the actual breadth of his role was an exciting revelation.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">&quot;I think even though I knew QHSE is involved in many different areas in the company, I was still a bit surprised by just how broad the role is and how many different kinds of tasks I got to work on,&quot; Topi explains.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">Throughout his four-month traineeship, Topi&rsquo;s daily schedule was packed with multidisciplinary responsibilities. He supported supplier compliance activities, compiled work instructions, developed safety documentation, and created training materials regarding information security and AI. He also actively contributed to Steerprop&rsquo;s sustainability initiatives by calculating carbon footprints and monitoring regulatory changes.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">&quot;I&rsquo;m glad I got to be a part of developing sustainability so to say. I like that Steerprop wants to be ahead of the curve in sustainability,&quot; Topi notes. &quot;I think the most interesting and unique experience is that I got to be here when there is a new ERP system coming. I get to see how it is implemented and how processes change and are thought about again and how people come together and think about solutions to problems.&quot;</p>

<h2 class="article__heading--h2">Big-Picture Maritime Exposure</h2>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">Navigating a sector where every propulsion system is tailor-made gave Topi a fresh perspective on production dynamics. &quot;I think what was different compared to my previous experiences was that at Steerprop things are project-based. And that makes it feel like there are many more moving pieces when every project is unique in a way,&quot; he reflects.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">To help him understand how these pieces fit together, Steerprop provided a comprehensive onboarding programme that extended well beyond his immediate duties.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">&quot;I really liked that even though I didn&rsquo;t really work with for example electrical and automation engineering I still got an overview of their side of things and I feel that helped me understand the bigger picture,&quot; Topi says.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">Among the highlights of his time on site was getting out into the assembly shop: &quot;I also got to see the production area and a test drive of a propulsion device.&quot;</p>

<h2 class="article__heading--h2">Practical Verification and the Path Ahead</h2>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">Bridging academic theory with physical manufacturing allowed Topi to directly test concepts from his coursework in supply chains, quality assurance, and sustainable business models.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">&quot;I think my studies have helped me get into the swing of things and understand terminology and why things are the way they are and the theories behind them,&quot; he says.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">I got a very comprehensive dive into the world of propulsion systems and the QHSE role that taught me a lot about what the work is in practice. That is something that studies cannot really offer and that&rsquo;s why I think these sorts of trainee programs are essential for every student.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" dir="ltr">As he prepares to tackle his Master&rsquo;s thesis in the autumn, Topi&#39;s experience has solidified his interest in maritime operations and QHSE. &quot;I think this summer has for sure made me appreciate it even more and maybe to even make it into a career for me,&quot; he concludes. &quot;The maritime industry is huge worldwide and also in Finland and so I am extremely happy that I have enjoyed being a part of it and I would absolutely be interested in working in the industry.&quot;</p>

Topi Kangas joined Steerprop as a QHSE trainee to gain experience in sustainability, quality, and process development within the maritime industry. During his four-month traineeship, he supported supplier compliance, safety documentation, sustainability initiatives, AI and information security training, and ERP implementation activities. The role provided broad exposure to project-based marine engineering and company operations. Combining academic knowledge with practical experience strengthened his interest in QHSE and confirmed the maritime sector as a potential career path.

Summer at Steerprop - Shaping Sustainable Operations

<p class="MsoBodyText"><em>Finnish marine propulsion expert Steerprop has retained its position as supplier for a series of tugboats being built by Turkish shipyard group Med Marine, securing a repeat order for two Steerprop SP 175 T propulsors for the third vessel in the series.</em></p>

<p class="MsoBodyText">The contract follows a similar scope of delivery for the first two vessels, which entered service in 2024 and were the first to deploy Steerprop&rsquo;s T-series propulsors tailored for the high-performance yet cost-sensitive tugboat market. The propulsors will be installed on a Rascal 2100-Z series harbour tug designed by Robert Allan Ltd., with the operator yet to be confirmed.</p>

<p class="MsoBodyText">The propulsion design meets the thrust, efficiency, flexibility and reliability demands of tug operators, while also addressing shipyard integration requirements with a focus on modularity and scalability. Validation by Med Marine &mdash; which operates its own fleet of tugs and owns a tug-building shipyard &mdash; represents a strong endorsement of the solution.</p>

<p class="MsoBodyText">Steerprop T-series propulsors combine the company&rsquo;s expertise in purpose-built propulsion with the competitive capital and lifecycle costs required by tug builders and operators. The sizing and powering of the units resulted from close collaboration between Robert Allan Ltd., Med Marine and Steerprop, demonstrating that tailored propulsion solutions can compete successfully even in highly cost-competitive markets.</p>

<p class="MsoBodyText">The robust, hydrodynamically efficient propulsors can adapt to different configurations and operating profiles with mechanical, hybrid or electric prime movers, while maximising available bollard pull. The two propulsion units for the new vessel will feature 1.80m propellers with nozzles and deliver 1,080 kW of thrust each, providing a total bollard pull of 35 tonnes.</p>

<p class="MsoBodyText">The scope of supply also includes wheelhouse controls, featuring Steerprop&rsquo;s adaptable and ergonomically designed lever system. The propulsion units and control systems are scheduled for delivery in February 2027.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) from ships&mdash;noise and vibrations from machinery and ship operations travelling through the water&mdash;can have a significant impact on aquatic life.&nbsp;As recognition of this impact has increased, reducing URN has become an important consideration for ship designers and operators, as well as port authorities and regulators.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">For operators there are two reasons to focus on reducing URN:</p>

	<li>Mission-specific requirements for certain applications that rely on minimal disruption to the marine habitat, such as marine research in sensitive areas, seismic studies for offshore infrastructure projects, and vessel engaged in aquaculture operations.</li>
	<li>Fulfilling requirements for port authorities (e.g., <a href="https://www.portvancouver.com/environment/healthy-ecosystems">Vancouver Fraser Port Authority</a>) and international vessel rating schemes (e.g., International Association of Pots and Harbors&rsquo; Environmental Ship Index, <a href="https://www.bsh.de/DE/THEMEN/Schifffahrt/Umwelt_und_Schifffahrt/Unterwasserlaerm/Runder-Tisch-Unterwasserlaerm/_Anlagen/Downloads/3_intersessional-meeting_HPA-environmental-ship-index.pdf?__blob=publicationFile&amp;v=2">URN module</a>) that can deliver incentives including reduced port dues.</li>

<p class="article__paragraph">Alongside IMO&rsquo;s non-mandatory guidelines to support URN reduction efforts, there are several class notations validating that overall URN from ships has been assessed and verified as being below defined limits.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Steerprop&rsquo;s propulsion design and integration optimisation has helped several vessels meet class, governmental and international requirements for URN.</p>

<h3 class="article__heading--h3">How do propulsion solutions affect URN?</h3>

<p>URN is measured holistically, with all noise from the vessel considered in one calculation. That means that noise from the engine, other machinery within the vessel and propellers contribute to URN.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">The noise and vibrations resulting from propeller cavitation are amplified by the ship&rsquo;s hull. This means that optimization for URN requires a holistic understanding of how both propeller design, and the propeller&rsquo;s attachment to and interaction with the ship hull, will affect noise and vibrations.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Large, single propellers have a far greater impact on noise and vibration than thruster propellers due to higher loading, higher tip speed, obstructed inflow and disrupted wake distribution. However, thruster propellers still require careful design, positioning to and connection with the hull to minimize URN.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">As with single-screw propellers in diesel configuration, there are parts of the drive configuration beyond the propeller that can affect URN. These include the motor, gears, bearings and shafting and how they are mounted and positioned.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph"><em>The new Polarstern </em>is a cutting-edge polar and marine research ship being built for Germany&rsquo;s Alfred Wegener Institute, to enter service in 2030. Destined for projects in highly sensitive marine environments in both the Arctic and Antarctic, it could be the quietest research&nbsp;vessel ever built, meeting strict acoustic requirements set by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea&mdash;ICES 209.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Steerprop was initially contracted to supply main thrusters and hydrodynamic integration for the vessel, based on both its deep ice-class expertise and its efforts to optimise propulsion for URN. Following initial discussions, Steerprop&rsquo;s scope was extended to include tunnel thruster design&mdash;making it the first supplier to take sole responsibility for propulsion and hydrodynamic integration on a Polar Class 2 icebreaker.</p>

<p class="Heading1nonumbering"><em>GONDAN Shipbuilders has placed an order with Finnish propulsion expert Steerprop for hybrid-capable azimuth units to be installed on a new high-performance tugboat&mdash;the first tug design from naval architect Skipsteknisk&mdash;for Norwegian shipowner &Oslash;stensj&oslash; Rederi.</em></p>

<p>Steerprop will supply dual-end versions of its <a href="https://bit.ly/4aoRJ36">SP 50 W D propulsors</a>&mdash;the most powerful ducted units it has ever delivered&mdash;providing the vessel with the flexibility to operate main propulsion using a diesel engine, an electric motor, or a combination of both. The 150-tonne bollard pull vessel will also feature DP2 dynamic positioning capability, meeting the high demands of offshore tug and towage operations.</p>

<p>The contract marks Steerprop&rsquo;s first collaboration with the Spanish shipyard and a renewed partnership with &Oslash;stensj&oslash; Rederi. It follows close cooperation between the companies throughout the development of the new multipurpose tug design.</p>

A robust mechanical propeller drive and fixed-pitch propeller concept ensure the reliability required for challenging offshore operations, where uninterrupted vessel availability is critical.</p>

<p>Steerprop&rsquo;s dual-end propulsors are particularly well suited to hybrid propulsion, with the ability to connect and operate two power sources. On the new tug, the majority of operations will be carried out using the electric motor, while the diesel engine will provide additional power when higher bollard pull is required.</p>

<p>Ducted propulsors are deployed where efficiency and thrust at low speeds and maneoverability are a priority, making them particularly well-suited to the tug segment.</p>

<p class="article__lead-paragraph" paraeid="{1da562a8-9bde-4dd4-94c0-82776817f059}{17}" paraid="660609091">For Mikael, a first-year student at Aalto University, last summer meant a change of scenery from Helsinki to Rauma as he landed a summerjob at Steerprop.&nbsp;Mikael had applied to several marine industry companies for design roles and was fortunate to secure a position at Steerprop. From the moment he learned he had the job, he was enthusiastic about starting and learning from design experts in the field.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" paraeid="{1da562a8-9bde-4dd4-94c0-82776817f059}{52}" paraid="846784162">At Steerprop, he was able to explore his long-standing interest in the maritime industry, gain hands-on experience in mechanical design, and see his studies come to life in practice.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" paraeid="{1da562a8-9bde-4dd4-94c0-82776817f059}{66}" paraid="1266359661">Initially, he assumed the office would be filled with older staff, but was pleasantly surprised to find many young, skilled colleagues. &ldquo;The marine industry turned out to be just as interesting as I had imagined,&rdquo; Mikael reflects, noting how quickly he felt part of the team.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" paraeid="{1da562a8-9bde-4dd4-94c0-82776817f059}{142}" paraid="646998327">Within the mechanical design team, he encountered excellent team spirit. &ldquo;Employees respect each other and are always willing to help their colleagues,&rdquo; he says. He made new friends who also became part of his social circle outside work.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" paraeid="{1da562a8-9bde-4dd4-94c0-82776817f059}{164}" paraid="978960315">The summer offered Mikael plenty of learning opportunities. His tasks centered on modeling and designing parts and assemblies for various projects, but he also got to program and develop tools for internal company use.<br />
&ldquo;The most exciting part was seeing designs move into the test phase,&rdquo; he says.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" paraeid="{1da562a8-9bde-4dd4-94c0-82776817f059}{182}" paraid="1255703783">Alongside work, team activities were another highlight. The daily lunches with teammates and a memorable sauna evening created bonds that extended beyond the office.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" paraeid="{1da562a8-9bde-4dd4-94c0-82776817f059}{192}" paraid="882655217">Looking back, Mikael describes the summer as motivating. He applied and practiced his academic skills every day, and the experience deepened his commitment to a career in mechanical design.</p>

Summer at Steerprop - A strong spirit of learning and doing 

<p class="article__lead-paragraph">Tuomas, originally from Rauma and a third-year Business student at the University of Turku, spent last summer at Steerprop engaged in meaningful work that merged theoretical knowledge from his university studies with real hands-on experience in the sales department.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">He applied for the summer job at Steerprop, expecting that work in such a fascinating and important Finnish industry would be both engaging and rewarding. Although he admits he didn&rsquo;t know what to expect, he hoped for the chance to join in real and meaningful sales-related tasks. &ldquo;And that has definitely been the case,&rdquo; he says.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Tuomas had a positive impression of Steerprop as a genuinely Rauma-based company with a lot of professionality and expertise, and his experience during the summer confirmed that image.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Although Tuomas had some familiarity with the marine industry from previous jobs, propulsion was a completely new area for him. &ldquo;Working in the marine industry has been very interesting,&rdquo; he says.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Tuomas&rsquo; daily tasks included working within the sales team, preparing quotations, and contributing to tool and infrastructure development. He very much valued not only the new colleagues and interesting tasks, but also learning new things, particularly about propulsion units and the sales process.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Tuomas felt warmly welcomed at Steerprop, describing the onboarding as thorough and the team as both trusting and supportive.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">During the summer, Tuomas also found many links between his studies and his work at Steerprop. &ldquo;I was able to reflect on different pricing, cost, and marketing-related issues, which are also familiar from my studies. I also noticed many tasks around me that relate to topics I study, such as procurement, internal accounting and information systems,&rdquo; he explains.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been interested in the marine industry for quite some time, and this summer strengthened my interest in working and building a career in the industry in the future. Propulsion units are an essential part of shipbuilding and the marine industry,&rdquo; Tuomas says.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Looking back, he is especially grateful to the people who made the summer so memorable. &ldquo;I would like to thank all my colleagues from the summer for an unforgettable experience. It was truly enjoyable to work as part of the team, and I hope we will meet again,&rdquo; he concludes.</p>

In&nbsp;the summer of 2025, Lotta Saari, a 21-year-old geography student from the University of Eastern Finland, joined the company to gain hands-on experience and explore the maritime industry.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" paraeid="{d9e4a3c7-8a43-4562-a1b5-2cb4cc6258f1}{15}" paraid="1097091475">Originally from Rauma, Lotta now lives in Joensuu, where she is about to begin the third year of her studies in physical geography, with minors in geoinformatics and sustainable development. &ldquo;After my second year at university, I hoped to find work that would connect to my field of study,&rdquo; she explains. &ldquo;I heard about the opportunity through my father, who had worked at Steerprop, and decided to contact my former supervisor. Luckily, there was a position available.&rdquo;</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" paraeid="{d9e4a3c7-8a43-4562-a1b5-2cb4cc6258f1}{19}" paraid="1295620235">Lotta joined the QHSE team, where her summer assignments included many tasks related to quality, health, safety and the environment. A significant part of her work involved manual calculations for carbon footprint assessments, giving her a chance to apply her university knowledge of sustainable development in practice.</p>

The fact that the very first propulsion units are still in use and serviceable, even after operations in very challenging conditions, was really impressive.&rdquo;</p>

<p class="article__paragraph" paraeid="{d9e4a3c7-8a43-4562-a1b5-2cb4cc6258f1}{29}" paraid="1740239981">For Lotta, the summer was both rewarding and inspiring.</p>

In the summer of 2025, Lotta Saari, a 21-year-old geography student from the University of Eastern Finland, joined the company to gain hands-on experience and explore the maritime industry.

<p class="article__lead-paragraph"><em>Finnish propulsion expert Steerprop has received a further thruster order from shipbuilder TKMS for the new German Research Vessel Polarstern. The addition of two Steerprop SP 40 TT ARC tunnel thrusters means that Steerprop will now provide the complete, fully-integrated propulsion thruster package for one of the world&rsquo;s most advanced research icebreakers.</em></p>

<p class="article__paragraph">The order builds on <a href="https://steerprop.com/articles/new-polarstern">Steerprop&rsquo;s earlier contract to deliver two Steerprop SP 160 Pull azimuth thrusters and hydrodynamic design of shaftline integration</a> for the new vessel. It means that the new Polarstern will be the first ever Polar Class (PC) 2 icebreaker project in which main propulsion, tunnel thrusters and hydrodynamic integration have been awarded to a single supplier.</p>

<h3 class="article__heading--h3">A complete, integrated propulsion package</h3>

<h3 class="article__heading--h3">A vessel built for extreme polar research</h3>

<p class="article__paragraph">Steerprop&rsquo;s gridless&nbsp;SP 40 TT ARC tunnel thrusters are specifically engineered for heavy ice operation engineered. They will work seamlessly with the main azimuthing units to meet the vessel&rsquo;s demanding operational requirements.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">The ICES 209 acoustic requirements applicable for the vessel are among the strictest ever set for a polar research vessel, meaning that all potential sources of underwater radiated noise (URN) to be minimised. For thrusters, this is influenced by propeller design, but more significantly through optimizing tunnel design and ship structure together to eliminate propeller cavitation. Flexible mountings for the tunnel thrusters further reduce URN by preventing propeller vibrations from reverberating against the ship&rsquo;s hull.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">The delivery also includes a full bridge propulsion control system and tunnel extensions, ensuring seamless integration with the vessel&rsquo;s hydrodynamic design. Deliveries are scheduled for 2027.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">The new Polarstern is designed to operate self sufficiently during extensive scientific expeditions in some of the harshest environments on the planet, in both the High Arctic (including the North Pole) and Antarctica. It will be among the largest and most capable polar research icebreakers ever constructed, with a length of approximately 160 metres, a beam of 27 metres, a draught of nearly 11 metres and a gross tonnage of about 26,300 tons.</p>

<p><em>Finnish propulsion specialist Steerprop has been selected to supply a complete propulsion package&mdash;including the largest ducted propulsors ever produced by the company&mdash;for a new Rock Installation Vessel ordered by leading dredging and offshore contractor Jan De Nul. </em></p>

<p>The George W. Goethals will become the third rock installation vessel above 30,000 tonnes in the fleet of Jan De Nul. The heavy-duty vessel is designed primarily to work in the offshore energy sector, installing rock to protect cables on the seabed. To meet the demanding operational profile, the propulsion system must provide exceptional power and reliability&mdash;capable of propelling a vessel with a capacity of up to 37,000 tonnes&mdash;while also ensuring high efficiency during transit and precise maneuverability during installation operations.</p>

<p>According to Juho Rekola, Director, Sales &amp; Project Management, Steerprop, this project exemplifies the company&rsquo;s ability to meet extreme technical demands:</p>

<p>The vessel will feature two main mechanical azimuth <a href="https://bit.ly/46YYnKq">Steerprop Pushing Propulsors</a>, each delivering more than 3 MW of power. With ducted propellers measuring 3.6 meters in diameter, these units are designed to deliver exceptional thrust and reliability under demanding operating conditions. Considering Steerprop&rsquo;s robust dimensioning principles, they represent the largest ducted units ever produced by the company.The propulsion package will also include two <a href="https://bit.ly/4q1lbSy">Steerprop Tunnel Thrusters</a> and two <a href="https://bit.ly/48gLhKU">Steerprop Retractable Thrusters</a>, ensuring precise maneuverability and optimal performance across all operating profiles.</p>

<p>This order continues the trusted cooperation between Steerprop and Jan De Nul, which has selected full Steerprop propulsion packages for the <a href="https://bit.ly/4nGL6gE">two largest advanced cable-laying vessels in the world</a>.</p>

<p><em>Icebreakers are essential for safe, year-round transport in some of the harshest marine environments. In the Arctic and other ice-covered seas, vessels must operate under extreme conditions where performance and reliability are critical.</em></p>

<p>Designing propulsion for ice-class vessels requires specialized expertise, as each region presents unique challenges. Steerprop has decades of experience in Arctic and ice operations, with more than 90 propulsion units delivered worldwide. Today, one in three icebreakers with azimuth propulsion relies on Steerprop technology. Our first Arctic thrusters have run for over 15 years and 600,000 hours without a single bearing replacement or gearbox opening.</p>

<p>Steerprop&rsquo;s azimuth propulsors are built for ice. With full 360-degree thrust, they open fairways, clear ridges, release trapped vessels, and protect offshore installations. Solutions such as the CRP ECO ARC and PULL ECO ARC combine powerful icebreaking with fuel efficiency, reliability, and automation. The contra-rotating propeller (CRP) system delivers superior thrust in both open water and ice, with a narrow slipstream that minimizes clogging.</p>

<p>Our expertise also includes ice-class tunnel thrusters designed to meet requirements without ice grids, reducing clogging and simplifying maintenance. All Steerprop units are supported by Steerprop Care, an integrated monitoring system that ensures predictability and reliability throughout the vessel&rsquo;s lifecycle.</p>

The Steerprop team has decades of experience in designing propulsors for the polar and ice environments. We have delivered more than 90 propulsion units for ice-classed vessels and have operational experience from icebreakers operating in the Baltic Sea, the Arctic Ocean and other ice infested areas.

<p>The reliability of our propulsion units is essential. They are used on vessels involved in very critical operations, such as ice management, on icebreakers, oil platforms, wind farm maintenance vessels and cruise vessels, where any interruption can cause huge losses. To maximize the reliability of the propulsion units, our technical department needs to consider the challenging conditions in both open and icy waters in their calculations. For example, different kinds of load cases need to be considered and propulsor tooth contact patterns need to be designed to be ideal for every specific condition and situation.</p>

<p>To ensure lowest lifecycle costs, we have developed Steerprop Care, our condition monitoring service, which enables us to support our customers in their operations and ensure operational quality throughout the lifetime of the vessel. For example, by monitoring the life of the propulsor unit&rsquo;s power transmission line, unnecessary downtime and maintenance can be avoided and both time and money can be saved. Steerprop Care turns unplanned disturbances into planned service.</p>

<h2 class="article__heading--h2">Close cooperation to achieve the very best</h2>

<p>To be able to add true value to our customers&rsquo; business, we are always open to new ideas and developments. This requires close cooperation with our component suppliers and manufacturers, listening to their research projects, being curious and continuously learning more.</p>

<p>The maritime industry also presents new challenges. When customers ask eg. for larger propulsors, it calls for complex considerations when it comes to material properties and manufacturability. By working in close cooperation with the world&rsquo;s leading component manufacturers, we can meet these industry challenges. For example, cooperation with companies that specialize in gears has helped us to achieve the proper hardening depths for gear sets. In this way, we can shape the lower body and get even greater results in efficiency.</p>

As we are determined to create even more efficient propulsion systems for the market, we concentrate on optimizing the shape of underwater parts to minimize flow resistance and take greater advantages of the contra-rotating propellers. In our optimization studies, we use model tests and CFD calculations.</p>

<p>As part of our commitment to developing propulsion technology that improve overall efficiency, we have developed the contra-rotating propulsion (CRP) technology ECO product line. The whole propulsor is pressure lubricated to lower mechanical losses compared with the commonly used oil bath lubrication technology. To ensure the reliability of the propulsion units, they are subject to comprehensive factory tests where the functionality of the system is tested and verified.</p>

<p>Another big development is our Steerprop LM unit, which uses an integrated permanent magnet (PM) motor that offers much better efficiency compared to a traditional induction electric motor. Moreover, by replacing our upper gear with an LM motor, we get more room in the ship for other components and we can avoid upper gear excitations in the ship hull, which is especially important for cruise vessels.</p>
