Driving Process Excellence: Veeti on Navigating Project-Based Marine Engineering
When Veeti Metsäkelo first joined Steerprop, stepping into an office environment felt like entirely uncharted territory. "I was a little bit nervous about having an office job. This was a totally new working culture for me but after a day I realised I didn't need to be nervous. Everyone was so helpful," Veeti admits.

Veeti is 23, from Rauma and in his second year of his degree in Industrial Processes and Materials Technology Engineering at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK). Having grown up around the maritime sector, applying for an internship at Steerprop was a natural step. "The maritime industry was already familiar to me through my family which originally sparked my interest in the field. Working here has made me even more enthusiastic about it," he shares. "After reading through Steerprop's website I was immediately interested in working in the service team."
Stepping into the service department, Veeti set out with a clear focus to expand his technical understanding. "I went in with an open mind but my main goal was to learn as much as possible about propulsion systems and Steerprop´s products," he explains.
Rather than relying purely on university modules, Veeti found himself drawing heavily on his background in practical operations. "To be honest, I ended up drawing more on my previous work experience here. Having that practical background was a huge help in getting up to speed quickly with these tasks."
His daily responsibilities centred on crucial aftermarket and operational support. Throughout the summer, he took ownership of key service tasks: "I've been preparing spare part lists for upcoming maintenance work and building service kits for equipment."
"What surprised me most is the really positive way that even as a summer employee I go to do real meaningful work," Veeti reflects. "I truly feel like a valued part of the company, not just a summer intern."
Adapting to complex marine engineering systems requires both precision and quick learning. Veeti found that Steerprop's open, welcoming environment provided the ideal space to build confidence.
"The whole team is so nice and helpful. Everyone is willing to help and overall, the atmosphere is amazing here," says Veeti. "For me the best part was meeting new people and genuinely feeling like part of the team from day one."
That supportive framework culminated in milestone moments during his placement. "A standout moment for me was when I finished my first service kit independently. Realising that I had actually learnt enough to assemble something useful for the field team felt like a great accomplishment."
Veeti's hands-on experience with custom propulsion systems has helped him define his long-term career aspirations within marine engineering.
"Yes, this summer has definitely influenced my future plans," Veeti shares. "It confirmed that I want to work in the maritime industry, specifically focusing on the service and maintenance of propulsion systems."
Looking ahead to his remaining studies and future career, Veeti already has his sights set on global operations: "My goal for the future is to be part of the field service team and travel to different locations for maintenance and repair jobs."
