The test nozzle during manufacturing

Key Features
In the design of the inner surface the following key features have been utilised:
  • A gradually expanding diffusor increases the flow acceleration in the nozzle. This can be seen in the high propeller pitch ratio and in a significantly higher nozzle thrust compared to nozzles with small or no diffusor angle.
  • The longitudinal position of the propeller is within the diffusor. This has been found to increase the nozzle thrust.
  • The inner diameter of the nozzle is equal to that of the propeller. This increases the effective surface of the nozzle

The outer surface has been designed utilizing the following features:

  • The outer surface of the nozzle has a hydrofoil shape. This prevents flow separation in all operation conditions, giving a distinghuised difference in resistance, compared to straight-back type nozzles.
  • A large nose radius on the profile, which reduces the pressure peak and prevents separation.
  • A thick trailing edge, which reduces the difference in power absorbtion between bollard pull and free running condition
