Using
the latest CFD-methods, parameters were found,
that enables a significant improvement in bollard
pull and at the same time reducing the nozzle
resistance at free running speeds.

A 3-D computer model of the HJ-3 nozzle

The solution was found by designing the interior
surface of the nozzle for maximum bollard pull,
whereas the exterior surface was optimized for
high free running efficiency. The nozzle design
optimization was performed for the complete
propulsor, i.e. including also the underwater
part of the propulsion unit itself.
The
calculation method has been validated against
the known performance of 19A and other type
nozzles.
