Most
of the current ship control systems are based on
proprietary electronic components with systems designed
and manufactured by the propulsion system producers.
Most of the systems are based on conventional principles
and technologies. One of the main disadvantages
with such a system is that spare parts and service
required to keep the vessel in operation may be
difficult to obtain due to spare part and maintenance
personnel availability.
During
a normal life expectancy of a ship at least one
major upgrade of the electronics is required. Thus
it is also very important - already at the design
stage, through design and component selection -
to facilitate a control system upgrade as easily
as possible at a later stage of the vessel life
cycle.
Based
on these facts Steerprop decided to use a strategy
different from most other suppliers. Thanks to the
long experience of making azimuth propulsor controls,
the following principles have been adapted:
