Steerprop Propulsors to Improve Oil Pollution Control in Gulf of Finland
(5 February 2003)

The Finnish Environment Institute together with the Finnish Maritime Administration recently ordered a renovation, extension and modification of the buoy-tender vessel Seili, to be carried out at the shipyard of Aslemetal in

Olkiluoto, close to Rauma in Finland. The work includes a basic renovation - including prime movers and propulsors - an extension of the hull of almost 8 m (to a new loa of 50.7 m) as well as modifications to enable efficient oil response work in both open and ice-covered waters.

Combating oil pollution from the sea surface (or ice) requires a lot of the vessel and thus the current propulsion system will be exchanged to a twin installation of diesel-electric driven Steerprop SP 25 units according to DnV Ice 1A. The use of azimuth propulsors provides the vessel with the position keeping, manoeuvrability and agility required. Furthermore the propulsors can be used to improve the oil collecting procedure, utilizing the propeller stream to prevent the spreading of the oil film during collection.

Due to the heavy ice class and to improve the performance in deep ice-rubble, the Steerprop units will have open propellers, with diameter of 2.2 m. The propulsion motor power will be 2 x 1100 kW.

Seili was originally built in 1979 and has the following main particulars:

LOA 42.9 m (new LOA 50.7 m)
Beam 12.6 m
Draft 3.8 m
