Rigdon Marine LLC - based in New Orleans, Louisiana
- recently commissioned their first PSV, the
Steerprop-equipped Orleans.
Orleans
is the first of a class of ten next generation
platform supply vessels designed by Guido Perla
& Associates, Inc of Seattle, Washington in
close co-operation with the owner, Rigdon Marine.
Orleans was built in Mobile, Alabama
by Bender Shipbuilding & Repair.

The basic concept behind the design of the GPA
640 was
to produce a class of vessels with low resistance
and high capacity combined with relatively small
size to optimize the economy.
|
The design thus includes diesel-electric propulsion
and Steerprop azimuth thrusters. This solution
eliminates long shaft lines and enables optimization
of the cargo tank layout. The result is a vessel
with greater capacity than many larger vessels
with better speed and all at lower cost! |

|
Orleans
is equipped with twin Steerprop SP 20 azimuth
propulsors with open propellers with a diameter
of 2300 mm. The input power of the electric
motors on each unit is 1566 kW. The Steerprop
units are of the lift-in installation option,
where the complete unit can be lifted in to
(or out of) the vessel as one part. In order
to enable containerized transportation (to add
safety and reduce cost of transportation) the
installation adapters were designed square.
