Remolcadores
de Puerto y Altura S.A. - REPASA - a prestigous
towage company based on Spain's Mediterranean
coast, has taken delivery of Romulo and
Remo a pair of ocean going ASD tugs built
at Astilleros Balenciaga in Zumaia in Northern
Spain. At 83+ tons bollard pull, the tugs -
equipped with a twin installation of Steerprop
SP 35D propulsors - are the most powerful tugs
of this class ever built for a Spanish operator.

|
|
|
Specifications
for the new tugs to serve the harbour
and terminal of Tarragona were multiple:
oil terminal shiphandling, harbour towage,
deepsea towage, fire fighting, pollution
prevention and oil recovery, maintenance
work on offshore discharge buoys (like
SBMs) as well as the ability to carry
special equipment in 20 ft containers.
The
requirements were translated into design
by Spain's leading tug designer Cintranaval-Defcar.
The tugs are classed to Germanisher Lloyd's
class with notation 100A5, Escort Tug,
MC-AUT, Fi-Fi 1, Oil Recovery.

Romulo
and Remo are powered by a pair of MAN-B&W
7L-27/38 engines, each developing 2380 kW at
800 rpm. The engines drive Steerprop SP 35 D
propulsors with fixed pitch propellers of 2800
mm diameter. These provide the tugs with 83+
tons of sustained bollard pull and a free running
speed of more than 13.2 knots.
The
tugs are equipped with "single engine FiFi",
i.e. in fire fighting the starboard engine is
connected to the fire pump, whereas the port
engine provides thrust, steering and station
keeping.
Fixed
pitch propulsion on tugs of this size and bollard
pull is unusual. The advantage of controllable
pitch has been taken over by the inbuilt idle-speed
speed modulating clutch in the Steerprop units
as well as with the implementation of "single
engine FiFi" philosophy. The main advantages
of this system is of course cost and simplicity!
